I've read through the template for magi, and I'm in a bit of a pickle not as to what I want to make for a master. My problem is that I wanted to make a Barthemoloi magus strictly for the personality of that particular family, but I didn't want him to be as ridiculously overpowered as Barthemoloi typically are. Mostly because that's no fun at all. Is there a way around this? I was thinking perhaps making him an exceptionally ungifted Barthemoloi, maybe even a disgrace to the family name, which would put him at a more normal level of circuits and magical ability. I figured that would also create some interesting drama for his history and give some dimension to his personality.
Of course, if there's no possible way I could get around him being that powerful then I can just make up a different family that isn't so powerful and keep the personality. The idea I have in mind just makes more sense with a Barthemoloi, and I was just curious as to if it would work.

My advice would be to make a family with a similar mindset to that of the Barthomelois. You are free to give your character any kind of personality, and their family does not have to be canon; even if they are not Barthomelois they can have similar customs and ideals.
Besides, given how the Barthies lock up their heir until s/he is ready to not embarrass them in the outer world, it wouldn't surprise me if they just killed him before he marred their name any further by existing.
