‘This city is quite beautiful.EAdam mused.
He had been in Lucca for a few days, but before he had been too busy enjoying the food, the people, and the stores. Each was its own wonder that took Adam’s full attention.
Now though, it was the scenery’s turn to inflict joy upon Adam. It was the afternoon now; the sun was dipping down the horizon, giving an orange glow to the city that made the very buildings feel alive. It may seem to be contradicted by some of the aged, crumbled buildings, but really it just reminded Adam of wise old men, watching the youth of the present and teaching them of the past.
Still, the interest quickly faded all the same and Adam began to walk aimlessly through the crowded streets. While Adam could be interested in scenery, it wasn’t in his top ten.
No, beautiful as it was, it got nothing more then a brief glance of awe before he moved on. There was so much more to enjoy, after all.
There were the people, of course. Adam was rather rough speaking and hearing Italian, but he was good at picking up the gist of what people were talking about. A man parting his arms in a cross formation, speaking in what sounded lightly sarcastic, most likely exaggerating about a fish he had caught.
Yes, it was amazing really. People all had their own quirks, their own personalities, but some things rarely changed.
And yet they still remained fascinating, perhaps that’s why Adam enjoyed acting most of all. To be someone else (he hardly considered it “actingE he felt himself really become someone else when performing) was an exhilarating feeling: To understand different hopes and dreams, to see people having different emotional responses to the same situations.
Truly it was, at the very least, entertaining to watch.
He watched a small group of boys laughing with a smile on his face. He had only a vague idea why they were laughing, it was genuine so it was unlikely to be caused someone else pain or a lewd comment. Happiness, be it his own or others, was always his favourite emotion. People should always look on the bright side, after all. Leave the negative emotions for the screen and theatre.
He chuckled as he felt a jolt of pain on his left shoulder. People didn’t seem to enjoy pain very often, it was quite a pity. Why, he remembered being burnt after one of his uncle’s failed attempts to create a spell. He remembered pain washing through his body, it had been like a mother caressing her newborn child, a sign that he lived. It was only when he had felt nothing that fear had finally set in.
But then his mother taught him to not fear death. With but a few sentences Adam had learned that life and death were to be embraced as friends.
Life and death, pain and peace; he got along with all of them, although his friendship with peace was a bit strained occasionally. Peace had its place, of course. But truly one should always be ready to jump at the chance of action.
And indeed, Adam suspected this city was going to have a fair share of that.
He could feel it, even as his body went on autopilot, smiling at the passer-bys, ignoring their cold stare that said they weren’t too fond of this somewhat creepy stranger. He could feel prana gathering in this city.
Perhaps it was nothing; this was supposed to be the most “spiritualEland in Italy, after all, at least as far as his limited knowledge of the Magecraft happenings of this area. A prana gathering could be simply a natural occurrence.
Or perhaps the sign of a war about that was to happenEPerhaps a Magus wanted to relieve this land from another? That could be it.
Adam wondered if he could get involved. He could probably fight for one side or another. Who knows? Could get their family name on the Magus map if he did well! As the family of a wandering mercenary perhaps, but most Magus could at least, grudgingly respect those people; at the very least the ones with the tendency to survive.
Yes, jumping into a fight that was not his own was a great way to get attention! But first thing’s first, he had to go back to the apartment to get changed. Every Magus knew the importance of appearance, after all. Intimidation and practicality, those two things had to be well-considered when an outfit was chosen.
But yes, now was the time to have a shower and come up with a ridiculous costume that was still presentable. Had to leave an impact, after all!
Whistling a merry tune, to the surprise of some of the passer-by’s, he switched his body off autopilot and began to walk over to his apartment.
Not that it was far, his autopilot had taken him rather close to home, actually. He was already on Verity Street, now he just had to reach number 8.
And yet, he had the nagging feeling that something had happened while he hadn’t been paying attentionE
Eah, it was probably nothing.
‘mi scusi!E
He turned around. A woman, about his age, although a great deal shorter, had thrust a notebook and pen in front of him.
Well, what do you know! He had fans here too.
Giving her a slightly larger smile than usual, he took the pen and signed the notebook, making sure the signature was elaborate. He had an “officialEsignature, but when he could, he experimented.
‘Always a pleasure.EHe handed back the pen. With a sound that suspiciously sounded like a schoolgirl giggle, she left and vanished into the crowd.
That was fun, but now it was down to business. His apartment was steps away, a rather nice and large one on the ground floor.
Entering his apartment, he smiled as he looked around.
They say you could tell a lot about a person by how they took care of their home. Then again, people say a lot of things. Hopefully in this case it was just talk, because Adam wasn’t particularly good at keeping a house tidy. There was little fun to be had in it, after all; far more entertaining to hop around the debris of clothes and objects flung around the area, and if he learned to love the scent of unwashed clothes foreign objects that Adam had either bought or found in his travels, then surely others could as well!
Yes, it would be rather enjoyable when he would have to hastily pack everything up to leave. He was paying by the day, because honestly he had at the beginning not a clue how long it would take for this place to become dull.
Stripping down, he threw the clothes into the washing basket, although from the clothes around it, you could tell this was not a common occurrence. Still, Adam grinned. He would get better at it, for certain.
As looked over to the mirror, he noticed something rather odd.
‘HuhEDon’t see that every day.E
On his left shoulder was a mark that certainly hadn’t been there previously. It was spherical in shape, with jagged edges where it was cut into thirds.
He hadn’t seen the exact shape before, but few Magus wouldn’t know what it was. ‘Hey, what do you knowEa Command Seal.E
It took a few seconds, but it finally clicked. ‘WOOHOO!E
Adam had always been interested in the Holy Grail War from the little he knew of it. Epic heroes summoned to fight for a powerful artefact that grants wishes.
But most importantly: the fights. Fights that were suppose to be magnificent, laying waste to the surroundings primarily and the most likely either incredibly-fast or damn near invulnerable opposition secondarily.
Yes, he couldn’t finish that shower fast enough. He knew what to do, he had never thought it would happen, but he was ready enough for this day.

‘Ye first, O silver, O ironE
Thus begun the incantation; it had taken time to prepare, but it was time well spent. His blood was already boiling. This was far better then any small magus skirmish that he had originally thought. This truly was a war. A war with few people, but a war nonetheless.
‘O stone of the foundation, O Archduke of the Contract E
He didn’t have any proper catalyst, but that was a minor detail, the Grail would just pick a Servant it deemed “fittingEfor a person.
‘Hear me in the name of our great teacher, the Archmagus SchweinorgE
It was kind of odd the Grail had chosen him. There were probably plenty of other candidates in the city. It wasn’t like the Grail grabbed whoever it could to summon a Servant. No, it picked the best of the best, the seven greatest Magus in the area.
Nope, the Grail certainly didn’t pick more then seven. Adam would have had a Cheshire grin if he could without interrupting the ritual. Now this was the kind of thing that proved that the Wells family was meant to be great. Wait until they heard about this!
‘Let the descending winds be as a wallE
Now he really felt the circle beginning to work, he could almost sense it drawing a Servant to this place. The prana was all he could feel, numbing all other senses. The summoning was certainly a drain, but he could manage. He might need to take a nap soon after thoughE
‘Let the gates in all directions be shut, rising above the crown, and let the three-forked roads to the Kingdom revolve.E
Damn, he had thought the lines were amazing when he had read them! Saying it, his voice strong and authoritarian, was something else entirely, truly a masterpiece. Pity he wasn’t filming it, Adam noted that down for the most likely nonexistent next time.
‘Shut. Shut. Shut. Shut. Shut. Five perfections for each repetition.E
Perhaps he could be a director and use this idea for a movie. He could think of a few good names that would make great Masters, and some famous martial artist actors could probably do well acting as a Servant.
‘And now, let the filled sigils be annihilated in my stead! Set.E
He could see it now: a film that would dominate the box office everywhere, amazing action, but with an excellent story and true character emotions, as they fight for what they believe in.
‘Let thy body rest under my dominion; let my fate rest in thy blade. If thou submittest to the call of the Holy Grail and if thou wilt obey this mind, this reason, then thou shalt respond.E
But perhaps he should get his mind to the war at hand. How to win? He should probably see his Servant before making any plans. Probably smart to let others make the first move no matter what the ServantEBut would that be fun?
‘I make my oath here.E
Well, if he couldn’t think of the future for now, think of the past and present.
‘I am that person who is to become the virtue of all Heavens. I am that person who is covered with the evil of all Hades.E
After all, he had put some work into this momentous occasion.
‘Thou seven heavens, clad in a trinity of words,E
And being such a momentous occasion, it had to be dramatic. That was why he had started at the stroke of midnight the day after noticing his cool new tattoo.
‘Come past thy restraining rings, and be thou the hands that protect the balance-!E
It is also why he is currently wearing a clown suit.
