Effect: Extends a cone of prana from the users eyes that excites the molecules of any substances it encounters resulting in a sudden and rapid increase of temperature. This effect is cumulative and somewhat exponential in nature, creating a cascade of ever higher temperatures that can effectively destroy any ordinary material with sufficient exposure.
However this temperature effect can vary considerably depending on the material conditions and is thus somewhat hard to predict. Common flammable materials ignite almost instantly and possibly explode depending on their nature. While small amounts of liquid are boiled quickly, larger masses pose a problem as the eyes have a minor convective effect that in large masses result in liquid being replaced almost quicker then it can be heated limiting the cascade effect. This is even more true for gasses, though isolated random pockets will ionize into plasma creating a static charge and even a random arc or so. Solid materials though do not suffer from this problem as the matter converted to liquid is even more quickly converted to gas, making objects seem to disintegrate rather then melt and leaving fairly clean burns in material.
In battle the eyes are considered very useful as a weapon. A human can receive serious burns from the effect with but a moment's gaze, and if foolish enough to charge directly at the user they will die as the effect mounts, possibly with a hole clear through the. However the eyes are limited because of their linear nature and fairly small area of effect. As they can only burn what is directly in their path even small amounts of cover will block the effect until the cover is destroyed. The most effective though not the most practical cover would be to place a large mass of water between the user and their target. Staying beneath the surface of a commercial swimming pool for example.
In addition to having no solid interference the user must be able to focus both eyes on a target to achieve the full effect, peripheral vision is insufficient. This focus creates an rough oval around 20 cm wide and 10 cm high, which remains constant at all ranges forming a cone of effect with the variable distance from the eyes. This is the max area the eyes can effect (also limited by range) while a smaller more precise area can be used this does not reduce the prana cost of the effect.
Strictly speaking the effect is invisible but magi can observe it by following the lines of emitted prana which posses a bright red or even pinkish color. However the heated air generated is also faintly observable aside from the aforementioned occasional arc from ionized plasma. And of course the result of its use tend to be very noticeable.
