Hi there. Last time I roleplayed online was years ago, but I'm very interested in the Nasuverse, and this seemed like fun. As you can see, I haven't picked a character yet, and the reason for that is that the rules seem inconsistent. Some say I can only play a Servant, others say there is only room for a new Master. If someone could clarify here or in pm which is actually requested, I'll do my best to come up with something original! As a side note, I'm quite good about keeping up to date on forums, but reading backlogs is a pain. Do I have to be familiar with all the prior events of whichever of the two 'worlds' I end up in?

As far as I understood the rules that you can only have a Servant if you have a Master were scrapped some time back, so you're free to make any kind of character you like, assuming it follows the other rules.
The only limiting your potential success in creating a certain kind of character currently is the lack of partners in the opposite category. I for one know that there is a number of Servants that have been unable to find Masters because lack of them. That might change soon, but that is the impression that I've gained at the moment. Also the fact that you only have three slots for Masters and Servants, meaning you can only make three characters. Please ignore the fact there are people with two digits of characters, they were around before that rule was implemented.
I am pleased to see that you've read the rules with "temporaryname". No, you don't need to know what has happened, really, just read the overall plot and you should be fine. You don't need to read all that everyone else has been doing. I for one know that I have not. You do whatever you want. Ask questions in the OOC-box on your left to get to know more. Most people are friendly there. You'll notice instantly if you run into someone who isn't.
I welcome you to this site. I hope you'll have fun~
Edit: Oh, I forgot to mention. If you're making a Servant, ask in beforehand if there are slots for that class. I'm pretty sure Riders are filled up for the moment, though once again, I could be wrong. We recently had an increase in the number of slots per Servant, so most should have at least one open. Though make sure first, it makes life so much easier.

Thanks for the reply, very informative! I've got some interesting ideas for Masters in mind, though I'll have to do my best to not be Emiya Kiritsugu, since I watched Fate/Zero last month. If I was interested in becoming a Servant, who would I be asking?

Well. Any of the moderators. You can see their overall names on the left, and here you can find out all the faces and names they carry. Just seek up the mods in the list and find their other identities. Because each profile has its individual name, they often show up in the C-Box under one of their many, many identities. Except Isaak. He's always Isaak.
If you have a question, I would recommend checking the "last logged in" date on the one you are asking. Since there is so many profiles for each person, you need to make sure they will actually open the profile you are sending the message to. Well, and then there is the Questions and Answers area, where moderators are bound to find you sooner or later anyway. Or you can just ask here. If you catch a mod on the C-Box, then that is the fastest way to gain information. If it is just a question of slots or regular stuff, then anyone can be of service, and if they cannot they are usually kind enough to tell you.
Emiya Kiritsugu was a very unique magus. To have several of those kinds appearing would be... strange... though oddly enough not against the rules (unless you, like, copy him straight-off with name and everything). This is a war of snowflakes already. The Holy Grail War attracts a lot of weird people. If you're too weird, then the mods will pound you during evaluations. Watch out with that.
So, go ahead and ask whatever you want... wherever you want. To a mod is usually the best way to be official, but hey. Heheh.

Alright. I think I'm all set up. Thanks for the help! I'm going to be Atryom Kaminski (relative of Natalia Kaminski) a mage loosely associated with the Sea of Estray. He's primarily interested in researching the relationship between origins and alignment. He originally doesn't understand why he got command seals, since he sees himself as an academic. Now I just need to find a Servant, I think.
