- Professionalism
- Leslaw learned from an early age that the first impression is everything. Appearances and attitude matter. Leslaw always dresses sharply and is, for the most part, kind and courteous. She projects a a near-constant air of professionalism and it is hard for her to act otherwise, even in the company of good friends. It isn’t impossible to rile her up, but it would be difficult to do so without her leaving the conversation in disgust or giving some terse warnings. Leslaw also expects other people to be professional toward her, so she has a hard time understanding less-than-serious remarks made toward her. She is not easily swayed by emotions either.
- Honesty
- Being truthful is an important concept to Leslaw. Her job is to search for the truth, but beyond that she just plain hates lying. She is unafraid to speak her mind, though that doesn’t mean she lacks tact. The truth can hurt as much as any lie, so instead of being blunt she prefers constructive criticism. In the same vein, Leslaw cannot stand when people lie to her or misrepresent the truth. Lying to her or others is the quickest way to fall out of her favor, regardless of the reasoning for doing so.
- Personal Space
- Leslaw does not like close contact. Or anyone getting near her. She’s not a fan of crowded places, either. Getting close to her is the easiest way to fluster Leslaw and something she very much does not appreciate. She doesn’t become a bumbling wreck of stuttering words, though. Past the initial shock Leslaw is quick to reform her composure, though still visibly on-edge.
- Process Oriented
- Whether it be getting dressed in the morning or writing an article, Leslaw has a routine she follows. She meticulously plans her days and lays out the steps she needs to accomplish for her tasks. When things happen outside of her expectations, she gets all screwed up. She is not very good at improvisation, likely being momentarily confused or tripping over her own words as she tries to figure out the best way to approach the new situation. If Leslaw can get a few minutes to think things through, she’ll be right back to normal.

MY HISTORY: //
My past? What does that have to do with this interview? My credentials are all right there. That should be enough for you to properly evaluate me. Well, yes, I can see the merit of knowing the roots of where one came from. What made them who they are today, correct? Okay then... I suppose I will start at the beginning.
My story begins in the slums. No, despite my appearances I started as a gutter rat. My mother was a stripper and my father... well, I’ll get to him later. Suffice to say he does not appear in this story right now. Anyway, my mother was a woman with no prospect for the future. Now, she was straddled with an unwanted kid. She hardly had money for herself, much less a child. I can’t say much as to why she kept me, but she did.
But you have to understand. Kids in the slums... they have no hope. It is a depressing place. Society does not care for them and they don’t care for society. Some have aspirations for something better, but few ever reach it. Most get sucked into gangs and crime before they can claw their way out. Who can blame them? It is all they know. Society has abandoned them, so they are doing the best they can do. They know no other life but the one set before them. Parents always hope their kids will live a better life, but it does not happen often for the poor.
My mother decided that I had to do better than her. She did not want to see me as a stripper, or a prostitute, or some gang-bangers floozie. You get the idea. The first step to doing that was raising me as a boy. Yes, I didn’t learn otherwise until puberty. No, I was not happy to learn about it. It was a confusing time... look, I got over it so lets not talk about it much, okay? W-well, yes, I still dress like a boy since I’m more comfortable with it but you’re missing the point here.
As I was saying, my mother strived to do her best to instill hope into me. The hope for a better life, the determination to achieve that dream. I can’t say her methods were the... best, but I can’t fault her for trying. After all, thanks to her efforts, I am here today am I not? Maybe I was always a determined individual, but I did not want to grow up being another statistic on the government’s gang violence report. It was not easy, but I applied myself to school and spent time in the library, despite jests and jeers from my peers. ‘What’s the point of studying? We have no future.’ they would say. It was not that they had no future, it was that they were too lazy to work for it. The path of least resistance, you could say. Yes, I understand that hard work is not a golden ticket to a better life, but without effort how can you ever look back and say you never had a choice?
As you can imagine, I did not have many friends growing up. I was always a serious sort. Never one for joking around. I guess you could say I’m exceedingly boring, even today. They would always tease me, but I never let it get to me. Well, no... I still confided in my mother. I was strong, but sometimes I felt it was easier just to give up. She was always the one who kept me straight when I faltered. In spite of the hand life dealt her, my mother still held her head high. She never gave up on me and, through her, I found the strength to continue onward.
I took many jobs in order to help with the finances at home as well as to build a small fund for college. I did eventually enroll into the local community college, did well enough to earn scholarships and attend a proper university. It was then that my mother died. Killed in a drive-by shooting. It was... a rough time for me. I was still struggling with gender identity issues and my mother’s death nearly broke me mentally. I was really stressed out all the time and, well, I still didn’t have much in the way of friends. I always felt like the odd man out, as you can imagine. I don’t really know how I coped with it. I guess I felt like I couldn’t just give up. My mother was dead, so I couldn’t just give in, not after all she did for me. I had to continue on, despite the tragedy. Still... I have regrets. I did not have nice things to say after the whole ‘you’re really a girl’ thing.
Of course, I got a degree in journalism. That’s what I’m here for anyway, a job, so I probably didn’t need to point that out. My mother lied to me my whole life and that cut me to the core. I don’t know her reasons for it, but I know she wanted a better life for me. While I disagree with her methods, I do appreciate her intent. However, I can still recall how that feeling of betrayal washed over me. I don’t want anyone to feel like that. That’s why I’m always honest. I suppose that’s why I got into journalism. ‘The search for the buried truth’. Maybe that’s a little... romantic, I suppose. But that’s the only way I can describe it. There’s a ‘truth’ out there, a single truth that needs to be brought into the light. The truth can inconvenient... or even hurt... but that is what the people deserve. It is a fundamental right, I think.
After the degree I worked at a news station for a few years. Yes, that’s all in the resume, so I won’t elaborate on it. There’s nothing to be said on it, really. I learned how the profession works, made some contacts, the usual. Oh, well, I did figure out who my father was. He’s serving time in prison for drunk driving and possession of drugs. I felt a little relieved that he wasn’t, say, a murderer. I did expect him to be in jail. Kinda hoped that wasn’t the case, but given my background I didn’t have much hope otherwise.
Hm? Plans for the future? I’d like to work abroad, actually. Someplace like France or Italy. Working abroad will help expand my horizons. I’d also like to get a Masters degree in journalism. Maybe specialize in something, though I’m not really sure what that’ll be yet. Definitely not politics, I don’t think I could stand reporting on that.

EXPERTISE: //[/color]
- Debate: Leslaw is good at debating, excelling at research as well as articulation. As she is difficult to rile up, she easily maintains a level-headed approach to any debate or argument.
- Running: While not a marathon runner (yet), Leslaw jogs on a near daily basis. Although she is not a professional runner, she still takes her jogging seriously and can move pretty fast. Her reflexes aren’t too bad, but she’s never tried parkour.
- Rational: In almost any given situation Leslaw will act logical. It might take a few minutes to adjust to the reality of what is happening, but once she regains her composure she will act in a cool and calm manner. Although Leslaw can be flustered, she almost never acts on her emotions alone.
